I have an opel astra 1.6i and i believe the rings and bearings are wornout due to exessive oil consuption ans alot of smoke. i was advised it might be a complete engine do over which is costly. could there be a cheaper repair or a recommendation that would save me time and money

You may use stop smoke as a temporary solution until you get more information regarding the issues with the engine from reputable motor mechanics. However, it isn't always the 'Rings' as it could be the 'Valve Stem Seals' which may not cost as much as an engine redo. I hope this helps...

This is a possibility as I had a similar issue with stem seals wearing out. If the car was well maintained rings should be the last place to solve the excessive burning of oil.
